G70 Guatemala
Silvia talks about six Australian cities.
Hello this is Silvia, I’m from Guatemala and I want to share with you some interesting facts about my country. The country is known as The Country of Eternal Spring. That means we have great weather the whole year. It’s around 20 degrees.

And we also have Mayan ruins. And the Mayan culture is very valued in Guatemala. We have jade sources. It’s one of the few countries in the world that has this kind of jade. It’s jadite. We actually commercialize it because Mayans valued it more than gold. So it’s a really nice souvenir to bring back home.

And what’s really interesting about my country as well is it’s a very small country, but we have thirty-three volcanoes – around five are active. Everywhere you go, you’ll see a beautiful volcano in Guatemala.

The nature in Guatemala is really interesting because, as I said before, it’s such a small country but we have a black sand beach, then we have a lake surrounded by three volcanoes, then we also have the Caribbean side with white sand and crystal clear waters. If you go to the North, then you‘ll find the forest with the Mayan ruins. So actually we have a lot of diversity for a small country.

One of the most famous cities in Guatemala is Antigua. It’s a Spanish old city and it’s a World Heritage city. It was actually voted by Wanderlust magazine from England as the city to visit in 2009 over Kyoto. They did the survey and it came out that ninety-nice percent of the people said that you have to go to Antigua in 2009.

Another interesting fact is that even though the official language is Spanish, we have twenty-two indigenous languages, very different from one another so they won’t understand each other either. So twenty-two languages in a country of fourteen million people. So I think that’s really interesting. So those are some things about my country.
