suit me

I like clothes that suit me.

When clothing 'suits you,' it means that it looks good on you. It is a good expression of who you are.  Notice the following:

  1. If you like sports, then probably shorts, a t-shirt and tennis shoes suit you.
  2. My teacher wears cool clothes, but he's so old that they don't suit him.

look smart

I want clothes that look smart.

When clothes 'look smart,' they are neat, clean and in good condition. Usually clothes that look smart are a little bit formal or serious.Notice the following:

  1. David Beckham always looks smart.
  2. Europeans usually dress smarter than Americans.

name brands

I don’t usually care about name brands.

'Name brands' are the names of the companies that make clothing. Name brand clothing often has a label that shows the brand name on the outside of the clothing. Name brand clothing often has a strong image.

  1. I hate name brand clothing.  Everybody wears it.
  2. Because of marketing, name brand clothing is usually expensive.

a slave to

I try not to be a slave to corporate logos.

'A slave to' corporate logos thinks that labels are very important. For instance, if you are a slave to corporate logos, you might be willing to pay more for a bag or shirt, just because of the label on it.  Notice the following:

  1. I'm a slave to Levi's.  I won't wear any other jeans.
  2. My girlfriend's a slave to brand name labels.

grow on [me]

After I see a lot of people wearing it, it grows on me.

To have something 'grow on you' means that you slowly start to like it. Sometimes we like a product immediately, but sometimes we have to see it many times before we like it.  Notice the following:

  1. At first, Ray Ban sunglasses reminded me of the 80's, but now they're starting to grow on me.
  2. When Jack moved to Japan, he didn't like the food, but now it's starting to grow on him.
