have a lie in

On the weekends, I usually have a lie in.

To 'have a lie' in is to sleep later than you usually do. If you don’t have work or school tomorrow, and you decide to sleep until 10am, you have just had a lie in.  Notice the following:

  1. I always have a lie in on Sundays.
  2. He works too hard to enjoy a lie in.

a night owl

I am a night owl.

A 'night owl' is a person who feels the most awake at night. A night owl stays up late at night, and has a hard time waking up in the morning. The opposite of a night owl is an early bird.  Notice the following:

  1. I was a real night owl in college.
  2. My dad wakes up at 4:00am every morning. He's an early bird.

straight away

I don’t get up straight away.

'Straight away' here means the same thing as immediately. If you wake up, and get out of bed immediately, than you are getting up straight away.  Notice the following:

  1. As a kid, I could never get up straight away.
  2. Let's not go home straight away.  How about stopping for some coffee?

get used to the idea

I stay in bed and get used to the idea.

'Getting used to the idea' of something is the same thing as accepting it. If you have to wake up early, and you hate waking up early, you might complain a lot.  Over time, though, it will probably become normal for you.  Notice the following:

  1. In Spain, I never got used to the idea of having dinner so late.
  2. It took them both a while to get used to the idea of being married.

sleep in

If I had a choice I would sleep in.

To 'sleep in' is the same thing as have a lie in.  Notice the following:

  1. I always have a lie in on Sundays.
  2. I always sleep in on Sundays.
