great outdoors

We have a river, the great outdoors.

The 'great outdoors' means nature. Mountains, forests, deserts, animals, and all other natural places or things are part of the great outdoors.  Notice the following:

  1. I prefer to vacation in the great outdoors.
  2. My wife is a city girl.  She hates the great outdoors.

fresh air

You can really enjoy fresh air and sunshine.

'Fresh air' is clean air from outside. When you leave the house and the air makes you feel more awake, that is fresh air!  Notice the following:

  1. Let's go outside and get some fresh air.
  2. The best thing about the mountains is the cool, fresh air.

dividing range

It’s one part of the Great Dividing Range of Australia.

A 'dividing range' is a mountain range that splits a country or area into two parts. Melanie is a part of these mountains.  Notice the following:

1. The Great Dividing Range is over 3500 km long.
2. Australia's great dividing range offers snow skiing in winter.

sense of community

It’s got a real nice sense of community.

A 'sense of community' is a feeling shared by people that everyone is a part of a big family. If you live in a place where you know all your neighbors, then it has a great sense of community.  Notice the following:

  1. I feel a sense of community when I visit my home town.
  2. There is no sense of community living in a big city.

get to

I can get to town really easily.

To 'get' somewhere is to arrive or travel there. If Ruth can get to town very easily, it might mean that she lives close to town or it might mean that transportation is very convenient.  Notice the following:

  1. I get to work about 8:45am and start at 9:00.
  2. Layla always has a cup of coffee when she gets to school in the morning.
