day off

What would be an ideal day on your day off?

A 'day off' is the day when we don’t have work or classes and get to do whatever we want with our time.  Notice the following:

  1. I usually sleep in on my day off.
  2. For most people, Sunday is their day off.

breakfast in bed

My ideal day off would be breakfast in bed followed by a movie.

We sometimes have 'breakfast in bed' when we celebrate our birthday or perhaps a wedding anniversary. The meal is, of course, prepared by someone special to us and then brought to us before we get out of bed. Notice the following:

  1. I cooked breakfast in bed for my wife on our anniversary.
  2. Have you ever had breakfast in bed?

lie in the sun

I would like to spend my ideal day off lying in the sun.

When we 'lie in the sun' that means we lie on a blanket or towel, often at the beach, and get a tan. Lying in the sun is relaxing, but it can be dangerous without sunscreen.  Notice the following:

  1. Lying in the sun is not so popular in Asian countries.
  2. I used to lie in the sun a lot when I was younger.

cooler

I’d take a cooler.

A 'cooler' is a plastic box, usually filled with ice, that keeps drinks and food cold when we go on a picnic or have an outdoor party.  Notice the following.

  1. If you  are hungry, there are sandwiches and soft drinks in the cooler.
  2. Don't forget to put ice in the cooler!

get some sun

I want to get some sun and swim in the ocean.

'Getting some sun' means that you are outside in good weather. Unlike lying in the sun, though, maybe you are walking around, playing sports or swimming.  Notice the following:

  1. After a long winter, it was nice to finally get some sun.
  2. Let's go outside and get some sun.
