crisps

I try to go a long time without eating crisps.

'Crisps' and potato chips are the same thing. In some countries, they are called crisps. Ireland is a good example. In some countries such as Canada, they are called potato chips or just chips.  Notice the following:

  1. Crisps are delicious, but they're really fattening.
  2. I usually eat crisps and a sandwich for lunch at school.

partial to

I’m not really partial to junk food.

To be 'partial to' something means to like it better than other similar things.  Notice the following:

  1. I love dogs and cats, but I'm partial to dogs.
  2. Most European sports fans aren't partial to American football.

fanatic

I’m a junk food fanatic.

A 'fanatic' is a person who really, really loves something.  A fanatic can be a supporter of serious things like religion or political beliefs. People can be chocolate fanatics or sports fanatics too!  Notice the following:

1. My best friend is a Hello Kitty fanatic.  She collects everything!
2. Michael loves football.  He's a Premier League fanatic!

trim ... down

I used to eat more of it when I was younger, but I've kind of trimmed it down.

To 'trim down' is to gradually reduce something. We most often use this phrase to talk about eating and weight loss.  Notice the following:

  1. Mom's trimmed down 10 kg since she began exercising.
  2. My clothes don't fit.  I need to trim down a bit.

slip

If I slip and I do eat any food that's not healthy it's usually fast food.

When we 'slip' it means that we do something that we know is not good for us. If we are trying to lose weight, but eat a Big Mac Set, that is a slip.  Notice the following:

  1. When I do homework, it's easy to slip and start chatting on MSN or play computer games.
  2. Tomoko's on a diet, but she slipped and ate some ice cream at the mall yesterday.
