on loan

People often try to get money from me on loan.

When we borrow money, that means we get it 'on loan.' This means that at some point the money will have to be paid back. Anything that we are currently using but will have to pay back in the future is considered to be one loan. Notice the following:

  1. I got the money for my iPhone on loan from my dad.
  2. In the US, most new cars are purchased on loan.

money burns a hole in my pocket

Money just burns a hole in my pocket.

When 'money burns a hole in our pockets,' that means we really want to spend it on something.  Notice the following:

  1. When she's at the mall, money just burns a whole in her pocket.
  2. I can't save money.  It just burns a whole in my pocket.

figure

I need to learn how to save money, I figure that will come in the future.

The phrase 'I figure' is similar in meaning to 'I think' or 'I guess'.  Notice the following:

  1. I figure that learning English will help me get a better job in the future.
  2. Experts figure that the economy will improve next year.

budget

I don't save. I just take money out of my account. I don't budget.

Here, the word 'budget' is a verb.  It means to plan how much money we will spend each day, week, month or year.  Notice the following:

  1. My budget is small while I'm at school.
  2. Do you think Bill Gates budgets his money?

resale value

I buy a lot of things that don't have any resale value.

The 'resale value' of something is the amount of money we can get if we sell it again.  Notice the following:

  1. Rolex watches have a high resale value.
  2. Generally speaking, used electronics have a low resale value.
