mild

They have very mild summers and winters.

'Mild' weather is not too hot or cold. It is comfortable. Notice the following:

  1. Most coastal American cities have relatively mild winters.
  2. The weather in Europe is usually mild in early fall.

change of pace

You get a nice change of pace with a cooler winter and a nice fall.

We use the phrase 'change of pace' to talk about something that is different than usual.  Notice the following:

  1. It was hot all summer so a little rain was a nice change of pace.
  2. I eat junk food for lunch almost everyday so sushi is a nice change of pace.

trade winds

We got nice trade winds coming in.

'Trade winds' are strong winds that blow across the tropic seas.  Notice the following:

  1. Strong trade winds are troublesome for Hawaiian golfers.
  2. Early sailors used trade winds to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

hit

She got hit by lightning.

To be 'hit' means to be touched or struck by a strong, sudden force.  It is almost always negative.  Notice the following:

  1. Southeast Asia was hit by a deadly  tsunami in 2004.
  2. My dog was hit by a car yesterday, but he's OK.

dampest

It's the wettest and dampest place in the country.

A 'damp' place has a lot of humidity, but probably no water that you can actually. After you take a hot shower the towels and clothes in a bathroom are usually a little damp.  Notice the following:

  1. It seems like London is damp and gloomy year round.
  2. Southern California is famous for nice weather, but it can be a little damp in winter.
