shouldn't

I shouldn't say that. That might be bad luck.

'Shouldn't' is the short form of 'should not.  We use 'shouldn't' to talk about something that is not good to do in a certain situation.  Notice the following:

  1. You shouldn't talk on your mobile while driving.
  2. I shouldn't have gotten angry with my mom.

viruses

There's a lot of viruses in hospitals.

A 'virus' is a non-bacterial organism that causes sickness and disease.  Notice the following:

  1. The common cold is actually caused by a virus.
  2. The doctor said I had some kind of virus, but it wasn't serious.

contracted some disease

They contracted some disease while getting their tonsils taken out.

When we 'contract a disease' it means we get sick, often seriously.  Notice the following:

  1. He contracted some disease while trekking in the Amazon.
  2. Hospital staff must be careful not to contract disease while working.

up-to-date

Some hospitals aren't so technologically up-to-date.

To be 'up to date' means to have the latest information or newest technology.  Notice the following:

  1. The meeting brought us up-to-date on the project.
  2. The computers at my school aren't so up-to-date.

reassures

It reassures me. I quite like it.

Something or someone that 'reassures' us stops us from worrying.  Notice the following:

  1. I was reassured to see some friends in my new class.
  2. He reassured us the parcel would arrive on time.
