participate in

My favorite sport to participate in is soccer.

When we participate in an activity, we actually take part in it. Notice the sample sentences:

  1. The new student was too shy to participate in the conversation.
  2. He doesn't like to participate in team sports.

to watch

My favorite sport to watch is basketball.

We watch sport(s) on TV or at a live event, but we don't participate. See the examples below:

  1. I don't participate in sports, but I love to watch tennis on TV.
  2. Jack likes to stay home to watch football all weekend.

by far

By far my favorite sport is football.

Here, "by far" talks about things we like the most. Mark likes many sports, but he likes football (soccer) the most. Notice the following:

  1. I like jazz and hip-hop, but rock is by far my favorite kind of music.
  2. Yao Ming is by far the most famous athlete in China.

as far as

As far as watching, that's a good question.

We use the phrase "as far as" to make the topic more specific. Here are two examples:

  1. I like to play sports with my friends, but as far as watching, I love boxing.
  2. As far as pop, Michael Jackson is probably the most famous performer ever.

no matter what

No matter what the weather, we will go.

"No matter" means that something in not a problem. Phil traveled every week to watch his favorite team. Bad weather was not a problem. See the samples below:

  1. Call me when you get home, no matter what the time.
  2. Disneyland is a lot of fun no matter what your age.
