cover up

Something that large, like Area 51, could never be covered up.

When people try to cover up something, that means they try to prevent people finding out about it. Notice the following:

  1. She tried to cover up being pregnant by wearing loose clothing.
  2. The government tried to cover up the facts about the war.

solid evidence

There has never been solid evidence something happened.

Evidence is facts or information that proves something. Solid evidence is just strong evidence. The opposite of solid evidence is weak evidence or flimsy evidence. Notice the following:

  1. DNA is solid evidence in most criminal cases.
  2. Dinosaurs bones are solid evidence that dinosaurs were real creatures.

doubt

I doubt anything happened.

When you doubt something, you think something is most likely not true or will not happen. Notice the following:

1) I doubt he will show up on time.

2) Most people doubt that the government is honest.

countless

Countless stars exist in the universe.

We use the phrase countless to show that there are too many items of something to count. Because it would take too long to count them all, it is countless. Notice the following:

  1. There are countless reasons why kids should go to school.
  2. The flood forced countless people from their homes.

arrogant

It is a bit arrogant to think we are the only life in the universe.

When someone is arrogant, they are too confident of their ability or worth. Arrogant people say or think great things about themselves. The opposite of arrogant is to be humble. Notice the following:

  1. He arrogantly said they would win the game by 40 points. Naturally, they lost.
  2. Wealthy people tend to be more arrogant than poor people. Why is that?
