Meaning: Very many times; too many to count.

Examples:

Meaning: Moving without making progress; going around the same place.

Examples:

  1. We drove in circles looking for the restaurant.
  2. I keep going in circles with this problem at work.

end up late

Meaning: To arrive somewhere later than planned.

Examples:

  1. We ended up late because of traffic.
  2. If you don’t hurry, you’ll end up late for the meeting.

compromised sense of direction

Meaning: Having poor ability to know which way to go.

Examples:

  1. He has a compromised sense of direction and often gets lost.
  2. Because of my compromised sense of direction, I always carry a map.

looking up

Meaning: Searching for information (usually online or in a book).

Examples:

  1. I am looking up the train schedule.
  2. She looked up the word in the dictionary.

buffer

Meaning: Extra time or space to prevent problems.

Examples:

  1. I left early to give myself a buffer in case of traffic.
  2. Always add a buffer to your budget for unexpected costs.

just in case

Meaning: To be prepared for something that might happen.

Examples:

  1. Bring an umbrella just in case it rains.
  2. I saved her number just in case I need help.

oftentimes

Meaning: Frequently; many times.

Examples:

  1. Oftentimes, I work from home.
  2. She oftentimes visits her parents on weekends.

dry run

Meaning: Practice or test before the real event.

Examples:

  1. We did a dry run of the presentation before the meeting.
  2. The team had a dry run before the opening ceremony.

frowned upon

Meaning: Not approved of; looked at as bad.

Examples:

  1. Cheating is frowned upon in our school.
  2. Smoking indoors is frowned upon in many countries.

if all else fails

Meaning: If nothing else works.

Examples:

  1. If all else fails, I’ll call a taxi.
  2. If all else fails, we can try again tomorrow.
